A £1,000 funding award has helped Lindy Hop Jersey bring new dancers into the Island's swing dance community, while giving existing dancers the opportunity to develop their skills with visiting teachers.
In 2025, the club received a Sport Activation award from Jersey Sport, which was used to bring two experienced Lindy Hop teachers from Cardiff to Jersey for a weekend of workshops and classes.
The funding helped make the programme more affordable and accessible, with the club also contributing towards the cost. As well as supporting existing dancers, the project created a welcoming route into Lindy Hop for beginners and helped encourage more Islanders to give the style a try.
Dance for everyone
A key focus of the project was inclusivity. The visiting teachers used gender-neutral teaching approaches and encouraged dancers to explore both leading and following, helping participants experience different roles within the dance.
The workshops also explored the history and cultural roots of Lindy Hop, giving dancers a greater understanding of the style beyond simply learning the steps.
For those new to swing dancing, the programme offered an accessible introduction to a social and energetic form of dance. It also provided intermediate dancers with an opportunity to challenge themselves and explore new ways of moving, improvising and connecting with the music.
The impact continues
The benefits of the project extended beyond the workshops themselves. Participants reported increased confidence, creativity, musicality and connection, while the experience helped re-energise existing dancers and encouraged them to experiment with new movements.
Following the workshops, Lindy Hop Jersey saw increased attendance at its regular classes and social events. Local instructors were also able to incorporate new techniques and ideas from the visiting teachers into their own sessions.
The result has been a boost for the wider Lindy Hop Jersey community, helping to develop local teaching, improve retention and create more opportunities for Islanders to get involved.
What's next for Lindy Hop Jersey?
The club is now looking to build on the momentum, with plans for more visiting teachers, expanded workshops and community performances.
There are also opportunities for Lindy Hop Jersey to take its dancing beyond the regular class environment, with performances planned or explored for events including Liberation Day, Jersey Big Band concerts, the Jersey International Blues Festival and gigs at The Sundown.
It's a great example of how investment in dance can have an impact that goes far beyond a single class or workshop: helping people develop new skills, build confidence, meet others and discover a fun and social way to stay active.
