Jersey Hospice Care to Host Island's First Grief Disco

August 16, 2026

Jersey Hospice Care is bringing a different kind of disco to Jersey this October, offering people who are navigating grief a chance to connect, move, remember and find moments of joy together.

On Saturday 3rd October, the Community Bereavement Service will host Jersey's first Grief Disco at House of Champions in St. Helier.

Rather than being a traditional bereavement support session, Grief Disco creates a safe and compassionate space where people can explore grief through music, movement and connection. It isn't therapy, but the experience can be deeply therapeutic.

At the heart of the event is the idea that grief and joy can exist alongside one another. Finding moments of lightness, dancing to music or even having a laugh doesn't diminish the person who has been lost or the sadness that comes with bereavement.

A different way to experience grief

Grief can be an isolating experience, and not everyone feels comfortable with traditional forms of bereavement support. Grief Disco offers a more informal and accessible environment, with no expectation for attendees to talk about their experiences or participate in any particular way.

The event provides an opportunity to reconnect with the body through music and movement, meet others who understand the experience of grief, and simply spend some time in a welcoming environment.

There will be plenty of opportunity to dance to great music, just like at any other disco, alongside quieter spaces and reflective activities for anyone who needs a little time away from the dancefloor.

One of the thoughtful elements of the experience will be a 'permission for joy' ritual, helping participants acknowledge that it is okay to experience happiness, laughter and moments of lightness while grieving.

As the organisers put it: "We dance to remember, not to forget."

An event with heart

Grief Disco has already been welcomed at hospices and community venues across the UK, with previous attendees describing the experience as leaving them feeling "lighter, seen, connected, held, and less alone."

The Jersey event is being supported by Events by the Workshop and House of Champions, helping to bring this unique experience to the Island.

The event is open to adults and is alcohol-free. Mocktails will be available to purchase, with a non-alcoholic drink included in the ticket price.
