Taking up dancing can be an exciting but slightly daunting decision, especially when you're not quite sure where to begin. I'm often contacted by and speak to people who want to give dancing a go, but don't know what kind of class would suit them best. This article is here to help you figure that out!
Start with what you know (and love)
The best place to begin is by asking yourself a few simple questions:
- Do you want to dance solo or with a partner? Some people love the idea of dancing with someone - whether it's ballroom, salsa, or swing - while others prefer dancing alone, like in ballet, tap, street dance, or contemporary dance.
- What kind of music do you enjoy? Music plays a huge role in how much you'll enjoy a dance class. If you love Latin rhythms, salsa or bachata might be your thing. Drawn to folk traditions? Morris dancing could be a great fit. Prefer country music? Line dancing is lively, social, and full of energy. Love hip hop or pop? There are commercial and street dance classes that bring that music to life.
- Do you prefer structure or freedom? Ballet and ballroom tend to be more structured and technique-focused, whereas styles like contemporary or improvisation-based dance can feel freer and more expressive.
Think about your goals
People dance for different reasons:
- To get fit
- To make friends
- To learn a new skill
- To perform or compete
- To have fun and unwind
Whatever your reason, it's valid. Knowing what you're looking for will help you choose the right type of class or group. For instance, if you want something social and fun with no pressure, look at beginner-friendly social dance nights or weekly drop-in sessions. If you're aiming to perform, you might want to join a troupe or sign up for term-based classes that include showcase opportunities.
To help you explore what's out there, the Dancing in Jersey Directory is a great place to start. You can browse listings by dance style, find local teachers and schools, and even see what performance or social opportunities are available.
Consider the commitment
Are you after something casual once a week, or are you looking to fully immerse yourself in dance? Some people start with one class and end up dancing three nights a week because they love it so much! Others prefer to keep it as a once-a-week treat. Neither is better, it's just about what suits your lifestyle.
Also consider the time of day and location. Is the class close to where you live or work? Is it in the evening, or during the day? Practicalities matter too!
Try and try again (if necessary!)
One of the most important things to remember: just because you don't love the first class you try, it doesn't mean dancing isn't for you.
It might take a few attempts to find the right fit, and that's completely normal. You're not doing it wrong, it's all part of the journey. Each style has a different energy, each teacher has a different vibe, and each group has a different dynamic. Keep exploring until something clicks. And if it does click first time (just like Lindy Hop did for me), brilliant! You might even find yourself tempted to explore more styles as your confidence grows.
Ask for guidance
